Why I Believe Preterism is True
I’m not going to tell you the reasons that preterism is true. I want to tell you the factors that contributed to my acceptance of Preterism.
The purpose of this is to show why some may disagree and why that’s okay.
Before I heard the word preterism I believed...
That the Bible was written before AD 70.
That the book of Revelation had been fulfilled in its entirety at the fall of Jerusalem.
That the last days were the last days of the Jewish state.
That the death that Adam died in the day he ate the fruit was spiritual death.
That we should take the time statements literally.
That the kingdom of God has come in power and glory.
That one goes directly to Heaven at death.
That the coming of 1 Corinthians 1, James 5, and 2 Thessalonians 1 was at AD 70.
So, as you can tell from the above list, I had a lot less to unlearn than a lot of people. Most people, though, don’t have this background. I’d like to think that I would accept preterism regardless of my background, but I can’t deny how it assisted me in my journey.
Many of you may have some similarities to me, but some of you have also had to change a lot more.
Still, evaluate your life and see what ways you were positioned to receive this truth and you may discover how lucky you are.
So, we need to be careful in judging others for what they believe. Their background, upbringing, exposure to certain teachings, and other factors play into why they have trouble seeing your position.
Our unity doesn’t come from our understanding of eschatology but from Jesus. While we may have disagreements about one thing or another, the important thing is that we love God and love our neighbor as ourselves.
Love, after all, is patient.
Concerning things sacrificed to idols, Paul said that eating them was no big deal because there’s no such thing as a god outside of the Lord. He went on to add, however,
However not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
1 Corinthians 8:7
If Paul was patient with those who weren’t completely sold on the idea of there only being one God, then perhaps we can be patient with one another when it comes to eschatology, instruments, and other things.
Not everyone has had the opportunities you have.
