Truth is a Person, Not a List of Doctrines
Pilate once asked, “What is truth?”
In the book of John, Truth is never a list of doctrines, a group of necessary inferences, or a so-called pattern of worship. Truth is not something to believe; it is Someone in whom we believe.
Truth is not a collection of correct interpretations. Truth has a name, and his name is Jesus.
Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6).
JESUS is the Truth.
Earlier he told the people, “You will know the Truth and the Truth will make you free.” He followed that up by saying, “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:32, 36).
Jesus is the Truth that sets us free. Surely the Bible is inspired by God, but it is not the Bible that sets us free! The Son sets us free.
Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1-14), so when Jesus prays Sanctify them in your Truth; your Word is Truth” he is affirming what he did in John 14:6 when he said, “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 17:17).
When we realize that the Truth that sets us free, sanctifies us, and gives us eternal life is a person and not a list of propositions or a cleverly crafted systematic theology, we are set free from the need to be certain about everything we believe. We are set free from the idea that we have to worship in some correct way according to a pattern. We are set free from ourselves.
I can fellowship anyone who believes the Truth because the Truth is not a list of doctrines and beliefs—Jesus is the Truth. The very fact that he is the Son of God and gives us life because of what HE has done is enough for me.
Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” John 18:37
