Sometimes I Don't Know What to Write About
Sometimes I don't know what to write about.
Sometimes I sit here and think all night and struggle to come up with something to say.
Other times, like now, I have 21 article ideas on my list of future topics, and I don't know which one to pick. None of them stand out to me right now.
I could write on critical realism, a quote from Walter Wink, a connection between Genesis 23 and John 4 I noticed, and a cool article on Priscilla.
And while I got excited when writing some of those out, none of them feel like an article right now.
And that's okay.
Not every idea you have is a sermon, article, podcast, or whatever. It may just be a point in a sermon, or it could even be a sub-point within a sub-point. You know it is something, but you don't know exactly what it is just yet. It hasn't shown itself to you.
Sometimes I will think about a sermon idea for weeks, and eventually I just let it go because it doesn't want to work as a sermon, but that doesn't mean that it is useless. It may just be an article or two-minute video.
There have even been times when I've trashed entire sermons as I walked up to the podium because something else seemed more important to stay.
The point is, when you are trying to create something, whether it be a podcast, talk, or even a presentation at work, some subjects just aren't ready yet.
At least that's how it feels to me.
Jesus told His disciples that there were things He wanted to tell them, but they couldn't bear them, and sometimes we have an idea or thought, but we aren't ready to turn it into whatever it will eventually be.
So, I make lists.
Lists of one to ten word notes of ideas that could be just about anything from articles to sermons to books.
On days like today, I stare at the list and nothing calls out to me. Most of the time I write about something that isn't on the list at all!
But those items are on the list for a reason. I felt the fire at one point. I just have to wait on something to spark the flame again.
Hopefully, if you are the type of person who likes to create things, this article is encouraging to you. Maybe you can identify with me in my struggle to find something to say.
Or maybe you will be like me and write 468 words on what it is like to have a lot of ideas but not be able to choose one.
To be fair, I walked like eight miles with Cayden yesterday, so maybe that has something to do with it.
