Every fall I am reminded by a description from Charles Darwin, of all people, when he was describing the season as it occurred in Northern climates.

Pensive stillness

"Let me drift to sleep; Wake me up with the bears" I love this--a specific and vivid image that, at the same time, is ambiguous, meaning whatever it means to each individual reader. My first thought was, "Ah, that sounds nice", like a retreat with a book in my bed which I love. It felt comforting. But for someone else that feeling of wanting to go to sleep and not awaken until spring may come from a place of fatigue or depression, or some other reason. Anyway, well done.

Thank you so much. To me, the light that is heavy is artificial lighting. We sacrifice nature so rhythms on the altar of productivity and say, “Behold! This is very good.” And so instead of rain gathering in natural streams, rivers, and lakes, it collects in potholes in parking lots that sit where natural beauty once was.

This whole disruption of the natural rhythm is seen in winter when the sun sets before we even make it home from school or work. What if we learned from the bear how to move with the seasons?
