Here are five tips for my Christian friends on sharing political memes over the next 4-6 months:
1. Are you following the golden rule? “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12).
2. Are you showing sacrificial love for your enemies, even people that you think might hurt you? “But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).
3. Are you speaking truth without compromising our call to love? “…but speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 5:15).
4. Are your posts (and perferred politicians) patient, kind, not envious, boastful, or arrogant, do not insist on their own way, not irritable, don’t keep a record of wrongs, do not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoice in truth, bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, and endure all things? (Paul on love in 1 Corinthians 13).
5. Do your posts (and preferred politicians) bear the fruit of the Spirit? “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things” (Galatians 5:22-23).
